In your case, I'm not sure it's a matter of improving, more than just finding a style for each piece. Each fandom has it's own manner of emotion, which comes across in the characters, and thus in your drawing. It's the same way with coloring, shading, lines, and details. When I look at art, I think, "what moment is the artist trying to capture, and what does it make me feel?"
Even a character study without a background nor 'action' can convey a great deal - like your Katniss and Jack Frost. The characters that you work with, for the most part, are characters that have been on books and screen, and therefore have some leeway to their anatomy - take Harry's scar, for instance: some people draw it in the middle, or far to the left or right.
It's all ART and it's all OKAY.
